When embarking on a renovation project, the importance of proper lighting cannot be overstated. The right light fixture not only brightens up your space but also serves as a crucial design element that ties the room together. However, choosing the correct size and type of light fixture can be daunting. To simplify this process, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to help you make an informed decision that will enhance the ambiance and functionality of your space.

Layer Your Illumination

While there are many different types of lighting, there are 3 main categories that we consider when deciding how to light a space.

Light Fixture Considerations

When selecting light fixtures for your home, here are a few key factors to consider:

  • Aesthetic – Consider the overall style of your home and choose fixtures that complement the existing decor or planned renovation style. Also consider whether you’d like a particular fixture to stand out as the focal point of the room, or blend in as a subtle layer in the overall design. Check out

  • Scale and Proportion – The size of your space will directly correspond to the size of your fixture. See the General Rules for Sizing below for tips!

  • Functionality and Purpose – Define the purpose of each lighting fixture in a space, considering factors such as light quality, temperature, wattage, and shade type (transparent or opaque; large or small) to ensure they fulfill their intended functions.

  • Installation – Pay attention to the height at which fixtures are installed. Chandeliers and pendant lights should be hung at the right height to avoid obstructing views or causing discomfort. Consider the placement of fixtures to achieve optimal illumination and avoid shadows.

General Rules for Sizing

Use the sizing tips below as general guidelines when selecting fixtures for your space!

Dining Room Fixtures

  • Installation Height
    • 8-foot ceilings: 32 – 36 inches between the top of your table and the bottom of your fixture
    • 9-foot ceilings: 36 – 40 inches between the top of your table and the bottom of your fixture
    • 10-foot ceilings: 40 – 44 inches between the top of your table and the bottom of your fixture
  • Fixture Size – A good rule of thumb is that a fixture over a table should be 1/2 to 3/4 the width of your table. This works whether your table is a circle or an oval. When selecting a rectangular fixture to be hung over a square or rectangular table, err on the smaller end of the scale and choose a fixture that’s approx. 1/2 the width of the table and approx. 1/2 to 2/3 as long.

Wall Sconces

  • Installation Height
    • The standard height to hang a wall sconce is 66 – 72 inches from the floor. Consider this along with your ceiling height to select a sconce size that leaves enough space between the fixture and the ceiling.

Vanity Light Fixtures

  • Installation Height
    • Lighting above a bathroom mirror should be approximately 75 – 80 inches from the floor. The height of your ceiling will determine if you fall on the shorter or taller end of that spectrum.
    • When hanging sconces on either side of a mirror, it’s ideal for them to be eye level, approx. 60 – 70 inches from the floor.
  • Fixture Size
    • When centering a vanity fixture over a sink, it’s important to consider the width of the sink cabinet. An ideal vanity light length is 2-6″ shorter than the width of the sink cabinet.

Pendant Lights

  • Installation Height
    • If you are hanging pendants over an island or peninsula, there should have approximately 30-36 inches between the bottom of your fixture and the top of your counter surface.
  • Fixture Size
    • There is a lot of wiggle room for sizing! Basic guidelines dictate that the pendant light should sit at least 10-12 inches in from the widest part of your countertop. If your island is three feet wide you’ll want the pendant to be no bigger than 12 inches. Don’t cram too many pendants in. While it’s all relative to the size of the pendant, there should be approximately 30 inches in between bulbs. If your pendants are extraordinarily large, consider 24 – 30 inches between bulbs.

Entryway Fixtures

  • Installation Height
    • You should have 7 feet of clearance (minimum) from your floor to the bottom of your light if you have a one-level entryway. The higher the ceiling (and taller the homeowners), the more this clearance should increase.
  • Fixture Size
      • A very general rule of thumb for ceiling light and chandelier sizing is to add the width of your room to the depth of your room. For example, if your entry is 10 feet long and 6 feet wide, 10 + 6 = 18 inch diameter light fixture.

Remember that these guidelines are just a starting place, so trust your gut and don’t get lost in the math!
