The Ladybird Master Bathroom

BEFORE & AFTER

BEFOREAFTER

INTRO

The Ladybird Master Bathroom renovation was a collaboration with some of our favorite returning clients. Their sweet pup, Ladybird, has captured our hearts throughout three renovation projects now, and we are always happy for another chance to see her (and her humans, of course).

See if you can spot Ladybird in the photos!

See end of post for sources and materials.

Our main goals for the project were:

  • Updated appearance

  • Better functionality

  • More room in bath if possible

  • Expand the closet for more room

B E F O R E

The home is situated in a desirable and established neighborhood in North Denton, but was built in the early 1980s. The bathroom had never been updated, and there were a number of concerns.

The toilet area was very narrow and located immediately next to the shower. A furr down over the shower made the small space feel even tighter. The shower room didn’t have adequate ventilation, and as a result it was difficult to keep mildew at bay.

The main entrance from the garage was straight into the master bathroom, and no door provided privacy between this entrance and the rest of the bathroom.

From Our Homeowner

“Everything was the original layout, and the bathroom layout was very small. The shower and toilet were right next to each other, and literally only one person could be in the area at a time. The shower had a dark tile, and the ventilation was very bad. Not only did everything look dated, it was barely functional at best. The bedroom layout was ok, but the lighting situation wasn’t very good. Also, the closet was very small.”

DESIGN INSPIRATION

D U R I N G

We completely gutted the master bathroom and entrance from the garage and rearranged the layout of the bathroom. Keeping in mind our clients’ goal to age in place in their home, we moved the bathroom wall further into the bedroom to create a separate toilet room wide enough for a walker (should that be necessary). We removed all the furr downs in the bathroom and expanded the shower, improving ventilation by opening up the space and adding an exhaust fan.

When asked about the biggest change to the space, our client responded:

“There was a shared wall between the bedroom and bathroom that was moved to allow more room in the bathroom. The layout of the bedroom was a little odd, and moving the wall actually made the bedroom layout better, and allowed a separate toilet room to be built for the bath. Minimal space was lost in the bedroom since we mounted the TV instead of having it on furniture taking up that floor space. That one change also allowed for the shower to be expanded. Also, expanding the closet by taking in a small part of the garage made a huge difference. I now have a giant walk in closet, and again, minimal space was lost in the garage.”

In order to make the garage entrance more functional, we installed a custom mud bench and cabinetry for a “drop area”, and added a pocket door between the mud area and bathroom for privacy.

Custom cabinetry throughout increased the bathroom storage space dramatically, and lighting updates throughout brightened up the area.

“Kelley always does a fantastic job in helping us pick out the countertop, tile and paint, and everything looks wonderful in the end! Also, I was amazed how much space I gained with the new cabinets!”

In the master bedroom, our clients desired more closet space. We allocated some space from the garage to expand the closet, creating a long walk-in closet with custom shelving. What a game changer!

AFTER

The bathroom transformation was completed, and we know our clients are thrilled with the results! It’s one of the most functional and enjoyable homes a home owner can make an investment in. The expanded closet was icing on the cake, making every day just a bit easier and more beautiful.

When asked about her favorite part of the project, the client responded :

“The most favorite thing about my wonderful new bathroom is how easy it is to give Ladybird, our 75 lb Black Lab a shower now! She walks in, I have a bench to sit while bathing her, and then she goes to the new mud room to be dried off! She is so smart that she even knows how to open the pocket door once I’ve finished towel drying her! Thanks Kelley and Jeremy!

You guys are the best!”
