Nautical Navy Bunkhouse

BEFOREAFTER

INTRO

The Nautical Navy Bunkhouse attic transformation was born out of our clients’ desire to create a special place in their home for their grandchildren. Transforming an upstairs exercise space along with the unfinished attic storage was the perfect solution to the need for more space. We partnered with the homeowners to design a functional space perfectly suited for their everyday needs as well as those precious days when all the grandkids come to visit.

Our main goals for the project were:

  • Increase functionality
  • Increase storage
  • Ultimate grandkids getaway

BEFORE

We re-designed the space to include a new bunk room, full bathroom, exercise area, and two sitting areas. The wall separating the attic from the main house came down, we rerouted the electrical and HVAC through the second floor decking, and built a second floor deck for the new space.

“The house had a small bonus room and large attic space. We wanted a multifunctional room for our grandkids to enjoy a bunkhouse with plenty of room to play as well as a place where we could have our workout equipment for every day use.”

DURING

Our clients love the water, whether it’s in the ocean, lake, or pool. The bunk room bathroom was designed with this in mind, focusing on a blue-based palette with marine vibes. The blue and white tile mosaic flowing from the back wall of the shower to the floor is reminiscent of a waterfall, and the floor tile brings to mind the color and texture of driftwood. The white quartz countertop is a crisp and clean contrast with the inky blue vanity.

The 4 bunks were custom-built by the Irwin Construction team. They each include a reading nook, reading light, and custom millwork.

Nautical-theme blues, white, and whales are threaded throughout the new rooms. Kelley of Irwin Construction painted some whale art for our clients, further bringing life to this new space.

AFTER

The clients were very happy with the resulting family space, which was perfect for grandkids. The bunk beds and new bathroom were super functional and stylish. When asked to choose a favorite selection in the space, the family said :

The built in bunk beds are fun and functional. We have places for four grandkids to sleep that also have their own personal light for reading or a night light. I also like the natural walnut stained wood that contrasts well with the nautical colors.
