The Master Spa Retreat project is in a home on a beautiful street in Hickory Creek, Texas. The house was built in the late 1990’s and the design of the bathroom had not been updated since. The master bathroom was spacious and our client knew it had the potential to be a relaxing spa-like space, but the dark wood vanities and black cultured marble dominated the room.

Our goal was to keep the open floor plan of the bathroom while updating all materials for a serene, elegant aesthetic.

Wallpaper, beige tile, black marble – oh my! Everything in this bathroom pointed to a bygone era in design and our clients were ready to bring it into the current century!  We asked our client what her primary goal for this project was:

“I wanted to replace our outdated 1999 bathroom [including the] black marble sinks, tubs, and wallpaper. I wanted to replace our old corner built-in whirlpool tub with a modern free-standing tub. [The] bathroom light fixtures didn’t give enough light, and we had no light over the tub or shower. We only had four drawers in the vanities, and my vanity was old-style low height.” 

Even though we kept the bathroom layout the same, to meet the client’s requests, the project was a full gut and we rebuilt from a blank slate.

The house is traditional and elegant, and we were intentional to bring nods of this style into the new bathroom design with more detailed cabinetry, a chair rail behind the freestanding bathtub, and marble-look tile in the shower.

The woodgrain floor tile brought warmth to the room amidst a color palette of mostly white and grays. We tied the wood into other aspects of the design with custom dark walnut mirror frames, a teak corner shower bench, and a wooden bath tray.

Brushed nickel fixtures with gentle curves yet clean lines were the finishing touches to merge this traditional meets updated design.

Our client’s vision was “a much brighter bathroom with all updated fixtures and additional lighting. The Irwins changed all the light fixtures to LED and added additional lighting, making a bright and airy, modern look. Each vanity now has 11 drawers plus additional cabinet space, making our bathroom much more functional. I love having an electrical outlet in a drawer to keep my hair dryer hidden!”
