Enchanted Library Escape
INTRO
This renovation focused on transforming the upstairs and addressing key updates downstairs to create a more functional and inviting home.
Upstairs, the layout was segmented with separate living and media rooms that limited how the family could use the space. Downstairs, flood damage affected the stairs and the fireplace area. Our clients wanted to open up the upstairs into a bright and flexible communal space perfect for family gatherings and teenage hangouts.
At the same time, they needed thoughtful repairs and stylish updates to the powder bathroom, staircase, and fireplace to enhance both form and function throughout the home. By blending intentional design with quality craftsmanship, we reimagined both levels to better suit the family’s lifestyle and create spaces where lasting memories will be made. Follow along to see how we transformed these areas to meet this family’s needs.
BEFORE
The upstairs of this home originally featured a segmented layout with separate living and media rooms that limited its use and flow. The homeowners found themselves mainly using one room for storage rather than as a shared gathering space. The staircase and powder bathroom also showed signs of wear, and a leak had caused damage that needed addressing. Even though the fireplace had been updated, our clients desired a more modern design with dimension.
The clients wanted to open up the upstairs to better accommodate their family’s lifestyle, especially for their teenagers and their friends, creating a welcoming, flexible area for communal living. They saw this renovation as a chance not only to repair damage but to reimagine their space with improved functionality and a fresh aesthetic.
DURING
To open up the upstairs and enhance its usability, we removed the dividing wall between the living and media rooms. We also leveled the subfloor in the media room to match the height of the living space, creating a seamless transition between the two areas.
One of the most unique and beloved features in this renovation is the custom-built library wall. More than just a functional bookshelf, this built-in piece was designed to house a sliding barn door and serve as a visual anchor in the newly open space. The door glides smoothly behind the shelf when open, revealing or concealing the upstairs living area as needed. To complete the library wall, we installed a sleek sliding metal ladder and a stained walnut countertop, combining beauty with practicality and giving the space a touch of classic charm. It’s become both a design focal point and a functional win, especially for a family looking to maximize flexibility in a shared upstairs space.
In the powder bathroom, we transformed the look with fresh board and batten and walls painted in Sherwin Williams Rosemary, paired with a sleek quartz vanity countertop and new floor tile from Finishes Keystone Nero 12×24 in a matte black finish, lending a modern and sophisticated touch.
On the stairs, we removed the half wall at the top landing to open up the space and installed a custom welded metal stair rail with matching balusters. New carpet by Anderson Tuftex in Batique Mushroom Bisque was laid on the stairs and upstairs hallway, chosen for its durability and warm aesthetic.
The fireplace started as a corner feature that lacked dimension shape and presence, and now it is a truly beautiful feature in this home. We reframed the surround to add depth and proportion, added crisp trim painted in Sherwin Williams White Duck, and installed Star & Cross Nero Marquina honed marble tile for a bold, luxurious look. But one of the most special moments of the renovation was pouring the custom concrete hearth cap. Jeremy and the boys rolled up their sleeves and worked side-by-side to create this finishing touch. It’s a small detail that tells a big story about family, craftsmanship, and the care we bring to every project.
AFTER

The transformation of this home goes beyond fresh finishes and structural upgrades; it reflects the way this family lives, gathers, and grows. The once-segmented upstairs now functions as a bright, connected space where teenagers can hang out, friends can visit, and quiet evenings can unfold around a favorite book or movie. The custom library wall, with its sliding ladder and hidden barn door, adds both charm and adaptability, making the space feel personal, creative, and intentional. Downstairs, what was once a forgotten fireplace is now a statement feature in the living area.
At Irwin Construction, we believe a home should support your life, not the other way around. It’s not just about better lighting or new tile, it’s about making everyday moments easier and more joyful. We’re so grateful to our clients for trusting us with their home and inviting us into their story.
